Many car owners probably encounter the situation of having leftover motor oil when getting their vehicles serviced. Only the brand-specific oils sold at 4S dealerships often come in 3.5-liter or 4.5-liter containers, so one change is just about right—no waste at all! But most motor oils are packaged in 4-liter or 1-liter cans. What if your car needs 4.5 liters or 3.5 liters? For most Japanese cars, 3 liters is usually sufficient. So what should you do with the leftover oil—can it still be used, and how should it be stored? That’s what we’ll discuss today.

Unopened conventional motor oil has a shelf life of about 4 to 5 years; once opened, if stored properly, it can retain its performance for up to 2 years.

However, external factors can cause the engine oil to degrade prematurely.

Water has entered the engine oil. Normally, the water content in engine oil should be below 0.03%; if it exceeds this threshold, the oil will gradually degrade, and once the water content surpasses 1%, the additives in the oil will lose their effectiveness. Even high-quality oil is no match for soybean oil in such conditions. If the oil seal is not tight, the oil will come into contact with oxygen or dust; prolonged exposure of the stabilizers in the oil to oxygen can easily trigger chemical reactions, accelerating oil degradation. As for dust, it goes without saying—engine oil is designed to flush out impurities from the engine, so introducing more contaminants only makes matters worse. Moreover, direct sunlight, especially over extended periods, causes daily temperature fluctuations inside the oil container, which can lead to condensation and further accelerate oil oxidation.

How should it be stored?

Be sure to tighten the bucket lid securely. You can also place plastic wrap over the bucket opening, sealing it tightly with the wrap or a clean piece of plastic sheeting, then screw the lid on firmly—this will prevent any issues.

Store it in the shop

Most maintenance shops have a dedicated area for storing customers’ motor oil, so there’s no problem leaving it with them. In fact, they’re usually happy to do so, since you’ll likely return to them for your next oil change.

If the oil has not been stored properly, do not use it in your vehicle; instead, it can be repurposed for rust-prone components like chains, thus helping to avoid wasting the oil.
